WHICH TYRES DO I NEED FOR A CLASSIC BEETLE?

The Beetle has a long and fascinating history, beginning with its first prototypes in the mid 1930s and evolving over nearly seven decades. Full-scale production began in 1945, with the initial cars powered by an 1131 cc air cooled flat four engine. In 1949 a Karmann built cabriolet joined the line up. By 1950 hydraulic brakes were standard and in 1954 the engine was upgraded to 1192 cc. Later, in 1965, the Beetle gained a 1.3 litre unit and in 1966 an even stronger 1.5 litre version became available. Through these years the Beetle stayed simple, sturdy and affordable, ideal for post-war Europe and beyond.

In 1967 Volkswagen gave the Beetle a significant facelift. Vertical headlights, larger bumpers, dual circuit brakes and 12 volt electrics arrived on the 1300 and 1500 models. Then in 1970 the 1302 variant introduced MacPherson strut front suspension and offered a 50 bhp 1584 cc 1302S engine. 1972's 1303 added a panoramic windscreen and improved rear lighting and in 1974 rack and pinion steering became standard. German production ended in 1978, although Mexican built saloons continued until 2003, when the final classic Beetle rolled off the line.

An often overlooked but crucial part of the Beetle’s character is its tyres. From the early 1950s most Beetles came with 15 inch wheels and 5.60 15 (often written 560 15) crossply tyres. Later, from 1971, owners were offered the option of a radial tyre, the 155SR15, which could be fitted in place of the crossply for improved grip and handling. For Beetles fitted with wider wheels there was even the choice of 185/70R15 tyres from 1971 onwards

For today’s restorers and classic car drivers these tyre choices matter a great deal. At Vintage Tyres, we offer a range of authentic 560 15 crossply tyres, the same size many Beetles used in the '50s and '60s, preserving the soft period ride and the distinctive appearance owners appreciate. We also supply 155R15 and 165R15 radial tyres for those who prefer better handling and reliability on modern roads. For Beetles with wider wheels we can provide 185/70R15 radials, which offer a more confident feel while still retaining the correct vintage look.
