Mould breaking Ford saloon. The Cortina had been the UK's biggest selling model, possibly by being inoffensive to a pretty conservative company car market. Replacing it with an aerodynamic, slightly spaceship looking, car was a bold move. Ford did play safe by keeping a lot of the running gear from previous models, but even so, blazing a trail for other manufacturers did dent sales initially. Eventually they did become a common sight, but always looked different.

Standard saloon tyre was a 165SR13, with the option of 185/70SR13 on a wider wheel.

Estates came with a 175SR13, or 195/70SR13 optional tyre.

The XR4i was fitted with a 195/60VR14.
